Unique Approach To Yoga

On Saturday, July 24, the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica became an open-air yoga party, complete with live music and the city’s top yoga teachers leading classes – a unique and unforgettable experience for expert and novice yogis alike. The event was the sixth in a series of seven one-of-a-kind yoga events held at some of the nation’s most popular venues, made possible by Wanderlust and smartwater, who partnered to create Wanderlust Yoga In The City.
Wanderlust yoga

Why yoga in the city?

Woman doing yoga
The aim of this exciting series of fun and lively yoga events is to encourage community growth and provide participants with a day full of relaxation and rejuvenation in an imaginative setting. Each of the three classes held during Saturday's event drew more than 100 participants, and throughout the day a crowd of onlookers eager to see what was going on stopped by to check out all the action. "We created Wanderlust Yoga in the City with smartwater to take the music and yoga phenomenon to a whole new level," said Jeff Krasno, Wanderlust's co-founder. "Together we are able to unite the community to support an amazing charity, enjoy some awesome music, sweat out the day's stress through yoga, and meet like-minded people."

Unconventional Om

You might never have thought about practicing your downward dog next to a hundred-plus people (and accompanied by live music), or doing the warrior pose on a pier jutting into the Hudson river in New York, but Wanderlust Yoga in the City is all about doing things differently as a way to bring people together and spread the word about the power of yoga. Earlier events were held at the Civic Space Park in Phoenix, AT&T Arts Center in Dallas, Piedmont Park in Atlanta, the aforementioned Pier 63 in New York, and Grant Park (Butler Field) in Chicago. The seventh and final event will take place August 4 at Space Needle Park in Seattle.

Yes to open-air yoga

Instructor Wanderlust yogaWho wouldn't want to stretch their way to calm while enjoying the fresh air and sunshine? We love the idea of taking yoga to the next level and practicing amidst like-minded individuals in a fabulous setting with renowned teachers. Saturday's event was led by Tommy Rosen and Kia Miller, who incorporated chants into their class, Shiva Rea who turned her class into a jam session with a five-piece band at the end, and Hala Khouri ,who focused on internal peace during her session. "Wanderlust and smartwater are doing an incredible job of bringing together community, and nothing unites community like yoga, music and events like this," said Khouri about the event. "I think it is a vital part of what yoga is about, its community."
When they weren't practicing the tree pose, participants had a chance to unwind in the smartwater stress-less lounges, take pictures in the smartwater/Wanderlust photo booth and create their own memory bracelets from beads inspired by smartwater colors.

C'mon, get healthy

Along with giving yoga a try in your hometown to reap the mental and physical benefits of this rejuvenating and soothing practice, Wanderlust Yoga In The City and smartwater have also kicked off smartlife, a Facebook application that leads participants through a series of positive goals that benefit their health, the environment and their community. The smartlife application also allows participants to invite friends and family to help complete their goals and to support Wanderlust's charity partner, Off the Mat, Into The World, in their mission of empowering individuals to transform their lives and their communities through the power of yoga. Om.

Fixes For Fitness Disasters

Unmotivated Fitness Girl

summer fitness disastersDon’t make a crisis out of a drama

Many people who begin a fitness and diet program start making excellent progress and then for a variety of reasons, just stop doing it and return to old tricks. This often happens due to a waning of motivation. They may have started out highly motivated but then lost interest with time. We as humans often forget how tough it can be to change a deep seated habit. We usually immerse ourselves in our fitness and diet program and expect it to go smoothly but then something gets in the way. A life event, a change in a daily routine or maybe you just decided it wasn't as important as you thought it was. Instead of making a crisis of it and nixing exercise altogether, deal with the drama and get back on track.

7 tips to get back on the fitness track

In addition to reminding yourself of all the reasons you have started losing weight and getting into shape in the first place, find ways to effectively rekindle your motivation. Not sure how to recommit? Here are a few tips and tricks that you can start today to help bring diet and exercise back into your lifestyle.
1. Use the power of imagination
Vividly imagine the time in the future when you've already achieved your goal. Imagine yourself feeling better, and looking better and with that whole new attitude that having a new body will bring to you.
2. Keep it in your face
Write down or print out the reasons diet and exercise are important to you. Put the list on your refrigerator so you are reminded each time you are in the kitchen. Make an extra copy and put it your bedroom as a reminder as you start your day and go to bed at night.
3. Set your own rules
Establish a solid set of diet and fitness rules. For instance, make a rule that you never miss a single workout, unless you are sick, injured, or have a very legitimate reason. Make daily exercise a high priority and view it as an integral part of your life. Missing workouts because you’d rather page through a magazine or watch a sitcom are not excuses. If you allow yourself to skip a training once for less than legitimate reasons, you’ll allow yourself to miss another time, and another, and then find yourself facing another fitness disaster.
4. Make exercise manageable
Even if you could achieve your diet goals by calorie counting alone, you will be more successful and healthier if you are physically active. The number one barrier to exercise is time. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week and, if necessary, break this up into three 10-minute segments per day to make it more manageable.
5. Avoid emotional eating
Eating in response to sadness, boredom or stress will quickly wreck your diet. It’s true: We humans associate food with feeling better. So, when you become aware of your urge to eat in response to emotions instead of hunger pains, find something else to do that will distract you for 10 or 15 minutes. The easiest distraction is to simply take a walk. Chances are, your need to emotionally eat will subside and you’ll ultimately feel better because you didn’t consume those unnecessary calories.
6. Slow down your dining
If you eat quickly, your brain won’t get the message that you are full until after you’ve overeaten. Put your fork down between each bite and pay attention to the meal you are eating. Tuning in can help you tame mindless munching.
7. Sideline a downward spiral
Don’t allow one mistake start you on a downward spiral to square one. Setbacks happen but instead of spiraling down, admit your mistake, forgive yourself, and get back on track right away.
There are many mistakes that can send you back to your starting point, wrecking all your hard work and success at losing weight and getting into top shape. However, you can quickly recover from a fitness disaster by using your common sense and never ever doubting your fitness commitment. With this combination you are set to succeed.

This beautiful fitness model was in MuscleMag International.
And she is a former lifeguard.
As with a lot of fitness models from the 80s and 90s, she seems to have just disappeared.
Some go on to become personal trainers or even in some cases doctors.
But some I just can't find any trace of.

Susan Balson's Gallery

"After just less than a year of busting my tail in the gym and dieting hard enough to quarantine me from friends and family, I competed in the Folsom, California regional competition and placed second behind a seasoned and well-qualified competitor. It was enough to get me addicted. I got to perform onstage (mostly dancing), show off all my hard work in the gym, and do some modeling afterward. It could not have suited me better. Since then, I have gotten certified as an ACE Personal trainer in order to assist others in accomplishing their goals, expanded my modeling portfolio, and just finished up a fantastic year of competiting in the Fitness America Pageant in the year 2000. With 2001 just around the corner I am already gearing up for the competitive season and eagerly anticipate the new opportunities that await me there."

Abby Marie

Faithful readers of this blog already know that Abby Marie is my latest fitness girl crush.
Therefore, I’ll get right to her scintillating teaser and resist the temptation to launch into a second loving treatise on just why I adore her so much… even though if ever there was a fitness girl worthy of a second loving treatise (or third, or fourth), she is Abby Marie.

If ever there was a fitness girl so beautiful that on her worst hair day, she still looks better than the skinny, airbrushed celebs sweeping across the magazine racks… If ever there was a fitness girl so tireless that after doing fifteen pull-ups, she still has energy left to smile and pose and laugh and vamp seductively for the camera…
If ever there was a fitness girl with abs so deeply ridged and defined that they resemble a brick wall overdue for a tuck-pointing… If ever there was a fitness girl with biceps so chiseled and lean that individual muscle fibers visibly dance and twitch with each mighty squeeze as if they were winking at you…

If ever there was a fitness girl so in shape to saunter across the beach in a bikini — the sun’s rays bouncing off the tanned curves of her muscles; the wind gently brushing her blond hair — that photos of her could double as postcards

PRIPEL FITNESS PHILOSOPHY:

At Pripel Fitness, our fitness philosophy is "don't do anything you can't do for life". If you can't maintain a specific diet for life, then don't do it. If you can't maintain a certain style of exercise for life, then don't do it. Why? Because the real 'secret' to life-long fitness and being in great shape is CONSISTENCY. That's right. Consistency. Steady devotion is better than periodic exhaustion.

HOW CAN PRIPEL HELP ME TO BE CONSISTENT?
We've all seen ads on TV saying you can get ripped abs in 3 minutes, lose 50 pounds in 5 minutes, and look great or 'your money back guaranteed'. All these programs prey on people's natural tendencies to want something for nothing. Everyone wants the quick fix and so they neglect what will work long-term. So how does Pripel solve this problem?

Getting in great shape and feeling great can come sooner than you think. No, it won't happen 5 minutes from now, but by working out with one of Pripel's professional fitness trainers, you will be given precisely what to do to get into great shape and to transform your body into that body that you've always dreamed of. How can it happen? One day at a time. Week after week, you will begin to see your body transform. You'll see the fat melt away. You'll feel the difference when you walk up the stairs or pick something up. Your body will be stronger. Your confidence will increase. And you will feel and look better than you ever have before.

Don't take our word for it though, check out some of our recent clients on the video links above who have consistently worked out with Pripel's trainers.

Amy Gilgenbach

Here’s somehighlights from a shoot with fitness competitor Amy Gilgenbach, in razor-sharp contest shape after taking fifth in the tall class at the ‘07 Junior Nationals. The energetic 28-year-old is a former gymnast and grew up in Minnesota.
Amy studied across the river at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, where she earned a degree in sports management. The soft-spoken 5-foot-5, 135-pound blonde is also an accomplished personal trainer, holding certificates from the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
She’s only getting started, but if Amy dominates fitness as well on a national level as she did in the Badger State — where the blue-eyed cutie was crowned Miss Fitness Wisconsin three times — we’ll be seeing a lot more of her to come.

Take Your Fitnes To A New Level

Women’s fitness is all about getting better, stronger and  faster. As you master the complexities of each exercise that you do, it is important that you strive to make it a little bit more difficult as you go along. This can mean adding weights, increasing repetitions, or mixing up your routines with circuit training. All of these will increase your stamina and endurance to help you move and improve your fitness to a new level.
Climbing to the next level of fitness will certainly provide plenty of physical changes. But it will also bring forth changes in the way you think, too. I’m talking about having more confidence in everything that you do. This new way of thinking will show in the way you handle yourself, the way you walk and talk.
First off, what is your target? What do you hope to achieve? Without this vital information you will never know if you have reached the goal. Successful people choose a target and then take aim. They decide where they want to go, formulate a plan to get there and then stay focused on their goal until they taste success.
Reaching your next level of fitness works the same way. That’s why keeping a fitness journal is so instrumental. Writing your goals out will help to keep you focused for success. Remember to log everything into your journal, even notes about your muscle soreness and any other pain or discomfort you have when exercising.
If you are looking for advanced exercises, check out my Exercise section and notice the Take it to the Next Level or Advance examples. You can add more weights, advance on the ball, or increase repetitions. These moves will build muscles naturally to show off your incredibly sexy feminine curves.
Will you need to spend more time with your workout? Perhaps thirty minutes is not long enough to accomplish all the exercises and cardio activities that you have planned. Be sure to record your start and finish times in your journal. The time of day that you exercise and how you feel afterward will give you a good indication of your energy level at that hour.
As you progress with your fitness routine, reassess your short-term and long-term goals. Reward yourself for a job well done and use your journal to record just how great you feel.

Celeb Trainer Tracy Anderson to Jillian Michaels: "Pregnancy Didn't Ruin MY Body!"

Last week, Jillian Michaels made headlines when she was quoted as saying (in so many words) that she didn't want to go through pregnancy for fear that it would mess up her gorgeous bod. The post drew some strong reactions from you, and now, one other big-name trainer is stepping up to say, "hey! I had a baby and look at MY body! Not ruined!"
0428-women-health-celebrity-trainer_vg03.jpg
"As you may have read in the news recently, some fitness personalities say that pregnancy and having a great body can't go hand-in-hand, that you have to choose between giving birth and looking great," writes Tracy on her Huffington Post blog. "I'm here to dispel those notions."
Being a mother is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding and meaningful connections you will ever experience. ... Of course, there are many ways to become a mother, and all of them are beautiful. But to claim that pregnancy and natural childbirth are somehow unhealthful for a woman's body sends an incorrect message to women everywhere.
Although I gained 60 pounds when pregnant with my son, I have never felt more beautiful since then. ... But I also knew that restoring my body after pregnancy would be an important gift for myself and my child, so during my pregnancy I began researching and creating a new fitness method that would give me the energy and strength I'd need once my baby was born. As soon as my OB-GYN gave me the green light to work out again, I started experimenting with my workouts whenever my son Sam was sleeping or with his Nana. Six weeks after having Sam, I was smaller and more fit than I had been in my entire life. It took a lot of work, but I am a testament to the fact that pregnancy is not the end to your dreams of a perfect body."
